Kokum is a non cultivated forest food growing in the western Ghats region. I happen to have a first hand opportunity to be part of a kokum harvesting community festival. We spent 4 days plucking or rather picking the fresh fruits. Washing and taking the pulp, Drying the seeds. Making fresh nectar. Making preserve using the rind. Making kokum butter and so on. The entire process was enriching and made me express my involvement and diverse use of the fruit and the joy of discovery and documentation.

Elaborate and decorative, I chanced upon well-aged vintage kitchen appliances and tools at Goa Chitra Museum recently. Each of these appliances seem to have a benevolent past and a lore of their own. Tireless hands rekindles memories of hot summer morning rituals in the kitchen....churning, chopping, scrapping, grinding and squeezing various ingredients. The processes ingrained in the fine crevasses of the Wooden Ravi and the ageless Grinding Stone. Our modern rationale may never be able to comprehend the reverent engagements the body undertook with the kitchen equipment's' from the past. The hands following the body pushing and pulling the grinding stone, the uneven surface of the stone crushing those morsels of garlic and chilies, the eye witnessing a slow medley of ‘masalas’ coming into a palatable form. If we go back in history, we will find that our existence had a delectable affinity for tools, specifically the ones used in food preparation that validates life as a celebration.
Hear the sound, it’s echoes Notice the breath, it’s palpable;
Notice the mind, it’s calm; Notice the hands, they know.
